The majority of people are interested in increasing their home, condo or apartment's energy efficiency, but lack understanding of how energy works and are not entirely clear on which home improvement projects yield the largest energy-saving benefits. Below is a pie chart illustrating where the average homeowner’s energy dollar is being spent.
Americans throw away enough aluminum every month to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet. Recycling 1 aluminum can saves 95% of the energy it would to make one from scratch, or equivalent to the energy used to power your television for 4 hours. Recycle a case of cans (24) and you have saved enough energy to watch your TV for Four Days straight, although we don't recommend watching that much television.
This picture shows many common areas of air infiltration that lead to the following:
- Cold floors, caused by poor ductwork, non-insulated crawlspace.
- Cold rooms, due to windows and doors being leaky.
- Loss of heat through ceiling openings into unconditioned attic space.
- Ice Damming on roof areas.
